Review: Vet Office

RATING: 4 Keys          RESULT: Win           REMAINING: 6:51

We are about to become the prime suspects in this unique kidnapping case.

Story

The local veterinarian has been acting strange lately and has mysteriously disappeared! You don’t trust this particular vet – rumors have been circulating, concerning ones, citing his paranoid behavior.

Oddly enough, word of an animal kidnapper being on the loose has suddenly cropped up in the news, and authorities are trying to hunt down whoever this person is – but you have a sneaking suspicion that the vet is the one responsible for the poor animals disappearing!

The last straw was when *your* cat, Dr. Mittens, has gone missing and you’re sure that the feline has been catnapped! You won’t stand for this and decide to take it upon yourselves to take action once and for all!

You were successful in sneaking into the office, where you find the doctor has locked away nearly just about everything! Surely Dr. Mittens is somewhere inside! You’ll have to look in every drawer, behind every door, and inside every cabinet to find your beloved pet!

Everything was going without a hitch until the door latched shut behind you and a loud robotic voice proclaimed, “Security system reboot complete. Locks engaged. Motion detectors active in sixty minutes.” Talk about paranoid! Why would someone need such a high-technology security system in a vet office? That is, unless they were hiding something…

Now not only must you find your pet, but you also need to deactivate the security system! Because surely if there was footage of all of you snooping around a vet’s office, there will be enough evidence to claim that you are the animal kidnappers, looking to strike in the most obvious of places – a place where animals get healed.

You must hurry! You have one hour to search the office for poor Dr. Mittens, rescue him, AND disable that security system on your way out. The fate of the animals rests in your hands!

Another bizarre story has made the local news.  For some unknown reason, animals, including our own, are disappearing without a trace.  Who would mess with these poor, defenseless pets? Our curious team of investigators is determined to get to the bottom of these mysterious kidnappings.

In an effort to do so, we make our way into the suspect’s vet office, only to become trapped at the mercy of an advanced security system.  As a result of this unexpected turn of events, we must now also find a way to flee the scene as soon as possible.  Otherwise, our group will become the new focus of this investigation.

Scenic

The mission to find Dr. Mittens begins in the veterinarian’s waiting room.  At first glance, this section of the office contains everything one would expect: chairs for clients, a receptionist’s desk, file cabinets, and a rack for hanging coats and other personal belongings.  Leashes, animal toys, and food/water bowls are also present throughout the area.  In addition, the walls are decorated with animal pictures and pet care information.

A deeper survey of the scene confirms the paranoid behavior of the vet.  Everything in the room, including a hamster cage, is securely locked.  Based on this observation, finding evidence of foul play may prove to be a rather time-consuming task.

As teams proceed further into the game, they eventually wind up in the examining room, which has a completely authentic feel to it.  Along the far wall, many cabinets and drawers (all of which are, of course, locked) are situated above and below a counter containing a small sink.  Next to this area is an x-ray view box and a table, possibly used for operations.  The other walls contain more locked cabinets and additional animal-related photos.

Puzzles

The strongest and most noteworthy feature of Vet Office is the puzzles, all of which are relevant to the theme and story.  There is a great variety of things to do during the search for Dr. Mittens, and each of the activities vary in terms of difficulty level.  Although the game is not technology-driven and relies on standard combination and key locks, it does a wonderful job making use of props encountered along the journey.

For the most part, the game-play is linear, but certain tasks can be worked on simultaneously.  Successfully completing each challenge brings the team closer to finding the cat and disabling the security system.

Overall

Overall, Vet Office is pure fun.  The combination of a compelling and truly unique story, realistic scenery, and creatively-designed and impressive puzzles results in a memorable experience.

The adventure is certain to appeal to escape-game enthusiasts of all levels, especially fans of the animal and mystery-themed genres.  And, although there are many tasks to complete, Vet Office is suitable for teams consisting of four to six players.  This will provide everyone with an opportunity to engage in the activities and feel the full effect of this amazing game.
