Review: Universal Horror Unleashed | Las Vegas

It’s time to put the BOO back into ‘premium boutique experiences!’

ear-event-overview-1031

Universal Horror Unleashed is a year round evolution of the renowned Halloween Horror Night events that have been fixtures at Universal Studios theme parks around the globe for more than three decades. And although this new venture is indeed full of haunted houses and eager scareactors, that is where the comparisons end. This experience is about as premium as it gets without buying out an entire theme park for yourself one evening!

But first, let’s take a look at the unique way this experience operates compared to the traditional Halloween Horror Nights events we all know and love. Universal Horror Unleashed is a permanent attraction that’s open all year long. Gone are those early November days of lamenting the end of another spooky season. Need something to fill that off-cycle scare void? Head out to Las Vegas any month of the year! Universal Horror Unleashed is open every Thursday through Monday from 2-10pm. To maximize the mayhem during the month of October, the venue also temporarily adds Wednesdays to their calendar.

Universal Horror Unleashed is the anchor attraction of Area 15’s newly opened Zone 2 expansion (which we’re legally required to preface does not exist.) If you’re unfamiliar, Area 15 is a hip, energetic Vegas hang-out full of attractions, food, shopping and art exhibits. It’s absolutely worth arriving early when coming for an evening of haunts to explore everything that makes this locale unique and cool.

Universal has purpose built a massive, climate-controlled show building that functions more like an indoor mini theme park akin to those found in Dubai and Abu Dhabi just to house this new experience. What that means is no matter your arrival time, it’s always dark as night inside the Shadow World. And perhaps even better, every square inch of the facility is kept cool and dry. Say goodbye to those long nights of sloshing around a hot, humid theme park in soaking wet shoes thanks to an ill-timed Florida thunderstorm. (We know this warehouse was built to hold in the nightmares, but it really is seeming more and more like a dream come true!)

The Las Vegas venue features four brand new semi-permanent haunted houses. Although their themes may seem familiar to anyone who has experienced a Halloween Horror Nights event in Orlando or Hollywood, rest in peace knowing that each of these haunts is, in fact, entirely unique spins on those past favorites.

Another big difference is just how those haunts are staffed. Now, don’t worry, each haunt has a massive number of scareactors popping out of every dark corner. Something entirely unique to Universal Horror Unleashed, though, is that each house has just one cast per day. For the uninitiated, traditionally a theme park haunt has what is often called an ‘A cast’ and a ‘B cast.’ This allows one group of scareactors to always be performing while the other is on break, and then they switch. Instead, at Universal Horror Unleashed, each haunt closes for roughly fifteen minutes every hour to allow the scareactors a well-earned rest. There’s also one 45 minute lunch break per house near the middle of the operating day.

It’s important to note that these break times are staggered, meaning that (with the brief exception of those longer over-lapping lunch breaks) there’s typically always at least three of the four haunts open at any given time. If tracking an hourly schedule seems a bit confusing to you, rest assured that most operations Team Members inside have a printed cheat sheet that they’re happy to share with anyone who asks. They also encourage you to take photos of it to keep track during your own adventures throughout the realm. (Ours is shared here, but please note that all times are subject to change.) We’ll admit that, even armed with photos of the schedule’s front and back, there were times that even we were a bit confused as to which haunts were open or closed. Thankfully, Universal Horror Unleashed’s greatly capped daily capacity makes this quirk much, much easier to navigate throughout a visit.

Another thing that sets Universal Horror Unleashed apart from a traditional Halloween Horror Nights event is that the entire facility has a unified, over-arcing theme. The attraction is housed inside Warehouse 25, but this is nothing like any Hollywood prop house you’ve ever seen. That’s because Warehouse 25 wasn’t just built as a storage facility; it’s a containment lockdown.

Each shelf is lined with forbidden objects that alone carry dangerous, dark powers – but when combined as they are within Warehouse 25, the risks are immeasurable. Luckily this facility isn’t guarded by a modestly trained rent-a-cop; Warehouse 25 is under the constant control and supervision of Legendary Truth – The Collective.

Fans of Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights events will no doubt be quite familiar with Legendary Truth. This mysterious organization of paranormal protectors has been tied to countless strange and unusual encounters for nearly two decades. Now, they’ve constructed this new facility to house the dark powers stored within this seemingly infinite collection of strangely familiar cursed objects.

Legendary Truth is far from the only easter egg that eagle-eyed HHN fans will spot inside Warehouse 25. This storage facility is jam-packed with recognizable artifacts from past Halloween Horror Nights events as well as actual screen-used props and set pieces from iconic Universal horror movies dating back to Hollywood’s golden age.

There’s just one problem: despite Legendary Truth’s best efforts to keep the evil safely contained, one more familiar face has also returned to reck havoc like only he can. Jack the Clown, the ultimate HHN icon character has moved his Carnival of Carnage to Las Vegas. With the help of his devoted sidekick Chance, they’ve managed to harness the powers of this vast collection of dark energy to open a rift directly into the Shadow World. Now, its evil energy is beginning to spill out all around us.

ear-haunts-1031

Each of Universal Horror Unleashed’s four haunts begin with queues so elaborately themed that they’re actually internally categorized as “Scene 1.” It may sound crazy to say, but it’s entirely easy to mistake you’ve already entered the haunt while you’re actually still just waiting in line.

Another major difference of this highly boutique attraction is that each haunt aims to pulse individual groups inside one private party at a time. Beyond simply allowing for much more unexpected scares, these intimate groups provide each guest with timed show moments that are otherwise impossible in the much more crowded Universal Studios theme parks.

Universal Monsters

Face the horrors surrounding you

Experience the terrifying worlds of Universal Monsters where you’ll follow in the footsteps of famed monster-hunter Van Helsing and enter the realm of the most iconic monsters in Universal’s storied movie history.

A queue themed to Van Helsing’s mausoleum serves as the gateway into the darkly iconic world of Universal Monsters – all of them.  Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolf Man, the Mummy, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Phantom of the Opera, the Hunchback of Notre Dam and more – they’re all here.

It will quickly become apparent that the scenic throughout each house is much more elaborate, because, simply put, it’s meant to be much more permanent. These wicked worlds flow in vignette from one monster to the next, seamlessly blending a path of exploration for those brave – or foolish – enough to step into the shadows.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Horrors surround you everywhere you go

Journey through a rotting farmhouse, its walls stained with terror and echoing with the screams of past victims. Hidden deep in the remote heart of Texas, something unspeakable awaits.

Based on the original 1974 film, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is faithful recreation of many well-known, memorable scenes. Beginning late at night in the local cemetery, another elaborately themed queue takes unknowing trespassers into a recognizable old gas station on the side of a dark and forgotten road. From there, a fresh account of this tragedy is about to unfold once again.

Wandering in and around the iconic Sawyer family ranch, would-be victims can expect several startling encounters with a chainsaw-wielding Leatherface. Oftentimes, these horror movie IPs quickly devolve into the titular character popping out over and over again in each subsequent room; but not here. Universal Horror Unleashed has done a masterful job of fully fleshing out (no pun intended) the world of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre by inviting virtually every member of the Sawyer kin, as well as all of their victims. This allows Leatherface himself to take a much more impactful role befitting the classic film’s lead psychopath, making his fewer appearance feel far more powerful as a result.

The Exorcist: BeliEver

Evil waits inside, enter the nightmare

Step inside Blumhouse’s The Exorcist: Believer, where terror takes hold and never lets go. Follow the living story of two girls overtaken by an ancient evil, their screams echoing through a maze of twisted torment. Try to escape before the ancient entity claims you as its own.

Based on Blumhouse’s 2023 hit film, The Exorcist: Believer is the most modern-themed IP to be found within Universal Horror Unleashed. Like the movie, this haunt follows two teenage best friends, Angela and Katherine who, after going missing are found to have been possessed by the demon Lamashtu.

This haunt faithfully follows the events of the film, bringing to life key moments in chilling fashion, including multiple moments of possession as well as close encounters with the demon itself. In a surprising twist, The Exorcist: Believer haunt includes a full-fledged theatrical show stop that attempts to banish Lamashtu from the souls of its victims.

Scarecrow: The Reaping

Enter the fields, face the Reaping

This isn’t just a haunted house, it’s a cursed harvest. As you make your way through fog-choked cornfields, the air grows heavy and still. But you’re not alone. Twisted scarecrows lurk in the shadows, emerging from the mist-covered cornrows—silent, soulless and always watching. Every rustle in the stalks could be your last warning.

As the old saying goes – ‘save the best for last.’ Situated at the far back corner of Warehouse 25, a dilapidated barn serves as an unwelcome portal back to the great Midwestern Dust Bowl, a period of severe dust storms that greatly damaged the ecology and agriculture of the American prairies during the 1930s. Local famers believe it to be a curse, with the land seeking its revenge for being over-plowed.

A cornfield looms in front of the old farmhouse, left rotting in the moon light. A rusted out pickup truck is parked in the yard, still stacked with haybales. The world-building is tangible, but here’s the surprise: this is only just the queue. And that’s why Scarecrow: The Reaping is truly Universal Horror Unleashed’s main event.

Inside, the old farmhouse offers anything but safety. Teeming with supernatural scarecrow monsters, this is the most aggressively engaged cast to be found in the Shadow World. Intricately detailed sets are brought to life through a whole host of atmospheric effects, and it all ends lost in a seemingly infinite cornfield, stalked on a dark, stormy night.

ear-scare-zones-1031

Although all interconnected by the over-arcing Warehouse 25 motif, Universal Horror Unleashed is technically broken into four distinct scare zones. There’s virtually no safe-space, as scareactors can be lurking anywhere, at any time. Each zone is home to one haunt, as well as various bars and dining locations.

Dead Storage

Once passing through Warehouse 25’s stringent security, foolish visitors find themselves in Dead Storage – home to some stunning and truly iconic pieces of horror history. The crown jewel of this collection is an actual set piece from the original 1925 Phantom of the Opera film. Believe it or not, this set was left standing for nearly a century on the actual Universal Studios Hollywood backlot, as legend said it was cursed. When the soundstage was finally removed to make way for that park’s version of Super Nintendo World, a piece of that iconic set was maintained and ultimately relocated to a facility much more prepared to manage such curses. Dead Storage is also home to the Universal Monsters haunt, as well as the bordering Boiler Bar.

Kill Vault

The cursed items of Dead Storage suddenly don’t seem quite as bad. Enter: the Kill Vault – a zone much more comfortable in its own urge for primal violence. Here, serial kills roam freely looking for their next victim at the aforementioned Boiler Bar, or the nearby Rough Cuts quick service dining location. in the Kill Vault, murder is celebrated – and if you’re (un?)lucky enough, you might just witness one play out live before your very eyes. This zone is also home to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre haunt.

Prop Graveyard

For those longtime fans of Halloween Horror Nights among us, Prop Graveyard is Universal Horror Unleashed’s threatening love letter just for you. An endless array of easter eggs are literally overflowing from crates stacked floor to ceiling. It’s a who’s who of iconic HHN references, from the giant puppet affectionally referred to as “Fuzzy” once found in HHN 28’s Slaughter Sinema haunt in Orlando to the unsettling double-faced masks of the beloved Treaks and Foons who turned Toon Lagoon into a giant foam party during the event’s debut at Universal’s Islands of Adventure in 2002. Prop Graveyard is where you’ll find The Exorcist: Believer haunt, and just beyond this zone is Universal Horror Unleashed’s full table-service dining location, Premier House.

Jack’s Alley

The final scare zone at the dead end of Warehouse 25 is where long-time HHN icon character Jack the Clown has unpacked all the toys from his Carnival of Carnage. Hidden amid countless clown masks and props are some pretty iconic easter eggs, such as Lady Luck’s roulette wheel from HHN 21, as well as the marquee sign from RUN, a highly popular haunt at Universal Orlando’s HHN XI. Lurking in this zone is Universal Horror Unleashed’s best haunt, Scarecrow: The Reaping, as well as Jack’s Alley Bar, which also serves as the first act of the Shadow World’s main show, Jack & Chance: Stay or Slay.

Jack & Chance: Stay or Slay

What’s a visit from Jack the Clown without a little murder, right? Shortly after kidnapping to Las Vegas street performers, Chance brings them back to Jack’s Alley Bar to make an offering to the Clown Prince of Chaos. But don’t call them ‘victims’ – yet, anyway. Each will have a chance to perform on Jack’s main stage before the audience is allowed to vote on their fate: STAY or SLAY!

Each act is unique, with one performer offering a cirque-style silk ballet while the other opts for an acrobatic break dancing routine. Their fates are each in the hands of a bloodthirsty audience craving carnage.

And a little pro-tip: stick around after the show for the shortest lines you’ll ever find for a free personal photo with Jack and Chance!

Roaming Atmosphere Characters

Although not technically considered ‘a show,’ these streetmosphere-style characters are above and beyond the true stars of the entire Universal Horror Unleashed experience. Their appearances may vary, though they do tend to stick to their specific scare zones. At any given time, brave explorers may encounter all sorts of paranormal protagonists, from an esteemed member of Legendary Truth’s Collective to a vampire queen and her brutish guard, a traveling circus performer who’s as skilled at juggling as he is at getting rid of severed limbs, and even Warehouse 25’s over-worked shipping and receiving clerk who keeps every crate documented on her handy clipboard.

All of these improvisational characters bring the Shadow World to life in a most immersive, intimate way that could never truly be attained at a traditional Halloween Horror Nights event. And while each of them are the real stars of Universal Horror Unleashed, only one of them is the star of those stars: a ski-masked serial killer. This performer has mastered the art of comic relief, bringing a much-needed balance to constant fears lurking in the Shadow World. But make no mistake, he still wants to murder you. Whether casually (and often invertedly) brandishing his trusty knife or sneaking up on unsuspecting patrons at the Boiler Bar with a chloroform rag, this serial killer is going to steal the show (and then possibly steal you as well.)

It cannot be overstated how immersive these roaming characters are. Make the time to interact with them; like all immersive theater, you get from it what you put into it. If you’re willing to suspend disbelief and accept the Shadow World is real, these characters will draw you in with a devilish delight you won’t soon forget.

Perhaps when you first heard about Universal Horror Unleashed, you assumed it would simply be a permanent HHN based in Las Vegas; we did too. We were wrong. Universal Horror Unleashed is so much more; it’s a true boutique attraction offering a premium quality experience without the premium price tag. It’s a place to find horror-themed genuine immersive theater in a killer atmosphere (get it?) with places to eat, drink and hang out. The haunts here, as good as they are, are just a bonus.

Early on, we mentioned how Universal Horror Unleashed differs from traditional theme park Halloween events in that it has one sole cast of scareactors present from open to close each day. While this can cause some speedbumps in understanding what’s open when, it comes with a major benefit that would have never even occurred to us had we not spent a full day in Warehouse 25: the ability build a rapport with the many roaming atmosphere characters throughout the Shadow World.

Early in the day, these may just seem like fleeting interactions – but as the hours pass, it quickly becomes apparent that they each remember you. And we’re not just talking having a character recognize your face – they actually remember your prior interactions, and, the more you encounter them, the more call-backs you’ll have as the day plays out. But make no mistake, this isn’t witchcraft; it’s all thanks to the combination of significantly capped daily attendance paired with some incredibly talented immersive improvisational performers.

And speaking of capped attendance, here’s one last pro-tip you’re going to want to hear: Universal Horror Unleashed isn’t Halloween Horror Nights. We all know those theme park events can get so crowded that your only hope of maybe seeing everything is to rush as fast as you can from one haunt to the next, with no time to breathe and even less time to soak it all in. At those events, a ‘long line‘ might be considered two or more hours for a single haunt; at Universal Horror Unleashed, that ‘long line‘ is probably going to be less than fifteen minutes.

To that point, it should be noted that there are two types of tickets for Universal Horror Unleashed – one that offers a single admission per haunt, and one that is unlimited access all day. While the unlimited ticket is ever so slightly more pricy, it’s worth every penny to make a casual experience out of soaking in the screams and feeling like a true horror movie VIP in a way you’ll only find here. Universal Horror Unleashed feels like a premium once-in-a-lifetime haunt experience, but this recurring nightmare proves that what happens in Vegas stays all year long!
