Review: The Other Side

RATING: 5 Keys          RESULT: Win          REMAINING: 12:19

At the end of the world there is a door. A door that leads to…The Other Side.

Story

Parallel universes are no longer just fiction. A tormented soul has opened a portal into a dark dimension, and unspeakable evils have entered our world, threatening our very existence.
You are a secret order of guardians sworn to protect our planet. You must venture into this wicked world and close the portal from the other side in order to save our own from complete destruction. You are our only hope.

A door to a dimension beyond. A portal to something unseen. A passageway to the other side. All seemed fictional until this very moment. A pathway to embark upon a new adventure has made itself apparent. Ouija boards and studies of the occult were always just playthings until now. Stepping into this standard waiting room-style location, there is no sense that what lies beyond cannot yet be comprehended. That traversing the void will change everything forever. It is time to take that next step – to The Other Side.

Scenic

The Other Side plays a perfect juxtaposition between good and evil in its scenic design. To begin, the room is simple and understated. The room feels like an upscale dentists waiting room. Movie posters are perfectly arranged along the walls. There is a full size couch, wooden desk, ornate coffee table, and full fire place complete with mantle above. The most impressive piece of the original room is the ceiling which is made completely out of pages novel pages forming a beautiful and inspired tableau.

Then the transportation begins as the tunnel between worlds exists primarily in black with a single altar at one end, light only by candlelight.

The final room is where the real magic happens as it is a mirror image of the original room in every way. Oh yea – except if it was dipped in a vat of pure evil. Darkness consumes this version of the room. Demon figures lurk in the shadows of the corners. The posters are all twisted and tormented. Boards are braced across each window and door, and the drywall and paint have been torn, pulled, even scratched away in parts to reveal the original raw surfaces underneath. It is clear that something very dangerous has been here, and it didn’t leave long ago.

Puzzles

The Other Side has by far and away some of Fox in a Box LA’s most unique puzzle designs. For one, the theme lends itself for several double versions of puzzles where there is a light side and a dark side. Since the room transforms into darkness, but the main furniture pieces stay roughly the same, it is important throughout The Other Side to be diligent in the analysis of the surroundings. Small things can change that give gigantic clues as to what to do next later on.

Fox in a Box LA has created a unique and authentic storyworld, within The Other Side, that exists separate outside of the world beyond the escape game’s walls. The puzzles feed the storyline from the beginning and fit perfectly into the narrative presented in the game. Each puzzle feels carefully crafted and manufactured to help further the plot and unravel a bigger secret. The puzzles in The Other Side keep adventurers engaged and excited, seeking more answers and they spiral down into the depths of the experience.

Overall

It is no secret at this point that Fox in a Box continues to deliver entertaining, enjoyable, and creative games time after time. The Other Side would have to take the prize, at this point, as their best game to date.

The newest game from Fox in a Box feels much more like a twisted episode of The Twilight Zone than an actual escape game. It combines compelling scenic design with intriguing and story-driven puzzles, making it a new must visit for escape rooms goers in the Los Angeles area. Find out if you have what it takes to venture to The Other Side.
