Story

After escaping the kidnapper, you have made an appointment with the town’s best shrink. After arriving and settling into the chair a strange foreboding overtakes you yet again.

What have you just walked into? And will you make it out alive?

After taking note of her escalating odd behavior, patients discover that a renowned mental health professional is actually an insidious serial killer. When left alone in her clinic, unsuspecting clientele stumble upon her hidden shop of horrors and expose an unsettling truth; they have unknowingly fallen back into the hands of their captor, only to now fear a much worse fate.

In order to survive, captives must decipher a gauntlet of diagnostic tests that serve as the keys to their freedom. With the risk of her true intentions being exposed, what lengths will the doctor go to in order to remain in the shadows?

Scenic

Unwitting subjects begin in an innocuous-looking psychiatrist’s office with ambiguous inkblot images painted on framed pages mounted to the side wall. A large ivory bookshelf defines the rear boundary, covered with assorted knick-knacks and other unremarkable decor. Time stands still on a white analog clock hanging nearby.

Inquisitive minds eventually uncover a carefully concealed passage leading into the clinician’s secret, macabre workshop. Standing in sharp contrast to the bright pristine initial space is a small shadowy corridor containing a mysterious wooden cipher wheel and a sinister message on the floor. A tall black podium lurks in the corner, reminiscent of a makeshift altar. The killer’s inner sanctum lies just beyond, through an ominous open doorway.

Stepping into this grisly lair unveils scattered bloody handprints and cryptic glyphs along the perimeter, a metal table against the far wall with morbid remnants of the most recent victim – suggesting a grotesque dissection cut short – and a chilling, crimson-stained sink. In the midst of the grim chaos, a peculiar portrait of a distinguished woman hangs next to the locked exit door, hinting at the fractured dichotomy of the doctor’s dark psyche. The gruesome contents of this room unmistakably point to the fact that the trusted medical practitioner is indeed a psychopathic murderer. The goal rapidly shifts from investigation of erratic tendencies to a frantic scramble to flee the premises in one piece, unlike the last poor soul to find himself here.

Puzzles

The Killer’s Instinct does not solely rely on traditional combination and key locks, as some innovative puzzles do capitalize on both the inherent clinical and horror themes; however, there is a notable absence of a coherent flow from one trial to the next. Two specific points lack any indication of how to move forward and require direct intervention to proceed. In addition, some clues are strikingly devoid of clarity which may result in subsequent frustration. Hostages are frequently left scratching their heads at the forced connections which seem to only exist because escape game.

While some of the challenges themselves may be unique, their place in this storyworld becomes questionable at times. Interactions with a few incongruous props seem to be for shock and awe purposes and simply do not make any logical sense in the scope of this unfolding psychological thriller.

Overall

Although the transformation of an unassuming therapist’s practice into a clandestine slaughterhouse effectively builds an urgent undertone, the narrative execution stumbles a bit here. Intended victims aren’t given a motive for the physician’s sudden murderous impulses, nor are they provided with a clear purpose for solving the plethora of strange assignments aside from mere avoidance of capture. There is the potential for a malevolent backstory to unfold that reveals the descent into madness, but it remains unrealized, leaving captives to escape wondering what just happened and, more importantly, why.

In the end, The Killer’s Instinct becomes a collection of missed opportunities that struggles to align its storyline, aesthetics, and gameplay into a cohesive vision. Because the plot never fully comes together, the puzzles feel entirely detached from the tormentor’s agenda, and the experience ultimately falls as flat as the heart rate of one of the doctor’s prior victims.
